About This Event

Festival overview

Janmashtami (Srikrushna Janmastami) celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, at midnight in Mathura. Devotees observe a day-long fast, breaking it only after the midnight puja and abhisheka.

The temple resonates with devotional singing, kirtan, and readings from the Bhagavata Purana throughout the day. At midnight, the birth of the Lord is celebrated with great joy — conch shells are blown, bells ring, and the divine child is rocked in a cradle (jhula). Prasadam is distributed to all devotees. Lord Jagannatha, considered the ultimate form of Krishna, is specially honoured on this day.
