Makar Sankranti
14 January 2027 · Makar Sankranti marks the sun's transition into Capricorn — the beginning of Uttarayana, celebrated with special pujas, sesame sweets, and kite flying.
About This Event
Festival overview
Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious solar festivals in the Hindu calendar, marking the sun's northward journey (Uttarayana) as it enters the Capricorn zodiac sign. It is celebrated across India under different names — Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Lohri in Punjab, Bihu in Assam, and Makara Vilakku in Kerala.
In Odisha and at the Jagannatha temple, special puja is offered to Lord Surya (the Sun god). Devotees take early morning holy dips, offer til (sesame) and jaggery sweets, fly kites, and pray for the onset of longer, warmer days. It is also the season of the sacred Makar Mela at Srikshetra Puri. At Sydney temple, the community gathers for puja, bhajans, and sharing of traditional Makar Sankranti sweets.
