Kumara Purnima
26 October 2026 · Kumara Purnima is one of the most beloved and exclusively Odia festivals — celebrated on the full moon of Kartika when the moon rises in full glory on a cool autumn evening. Young women and unmarried girls worship the moon and the divine Kumara — Lord Kartikeya — with songs, dances, and offerings of flowers and lamps, praying for a virtuous companion and a life of devotion. Kumara Purnima is uniquely and distinctly Odia — not observed in this form elsewhere in India — making it a treasured marker of Odia cultural and religious identity.

Festival overview
Kumara Purnima (Kumar Purnima) falls on the full moon of Ashwin month (Kartik Purnima eve in some regions). It is one of Odisha's most cherished festivals, celebrated primarily by young unmarried women who observe a ritual fast, pray to the moon, and worship the Sun god and Kartikeya (Kumar) for a good husband.
Kumarostava is the celebratory evening of songs, dance, games, and cultural performances. Girls dress in new clothes, light lamps, and sing traditional songs (Kumaruni Osha gita). The festival reflects the vibrant folk culture of Odisha and is celebrated with great joy in the Odia community.
