About This Event
Festival overview
Dola Purnima (Dola Jatra / Dola Utsava) is the full moon of Phalguna and one of the most joyous festivals at Jagannatha temples. The deities are placed on a beautifully decorated flower-swing (dola) and devotees take turns gently swinging the Lord, singing devotional songs. The festival celebrates the playful, loving aspect of Lord Jagannatha and his devotees.
Holi — the Festival of Colours — follows Dola Purnima celebrations, commemorating the burning of Holika (Holika Dahan the previous night) and the playful colour-throwing associated with Lord Krishna and Radha. Devotees splash each other with coloured powders (gulal) and water, celebrating the arrival of spring, the harvest, and the spirit of divine love. The temple atmosphere is filled with kirtan, laughter, and the vibrant colours of spring.
