About This Event

Festival overview

Bahuda Jatra marks the return journey of Lord Jagannatha, Balabhadra, and Subhadra from Gundicha Temple back to the main Jagannatha Temple. Devotees throng the streets to pull the chariots one final time.

On this same auspicious day, the deities are adorned in Suna Besha — the spectacular golden ornament festival where the deities are dressed entirely in gold jewellery and ornaments. This is one of the most magnificent darshans of the entire year.

Niladri Bije marks the final homecoming — the deities re-enter the sanctum. According to tradition, Lakshmi Devi, upset that Jagannatha left without her, blocks the temple door; the Lord appeases her with sweets (Rasagolla), and is finally allowed to enter — the playful divine drama beloved by all devotees.
